Beyond the Factual: Creating Truth!
Saturday, 30 June, begin: 16:00, Halle 14 and 20:00, Luru Kino
The relation between the documentary and art has long been tense. Different approaches, mothods and formats result from this and find expression in picture stories or photo essays and installations, performances, animations and exhibition settings alike. Stories are being told and accounts are given; with other words: truths are being performed in diverse formates and various ways. Not only are they produced continously, but also they can open up new fields of action. In this process, the relation to reality appears as maly-layered and extremely complex.
The event series Beyond the Factual: Creating Truth! traces art's persistant and changing interest on documentary material and questions current conditions, opportinities and potentials of the creation of truth. In what means is reality not only been testified but also manufactured?
The contributions of the invited scholars, curators, artist discuss the renewed focus on the pluralized, multimedia coverage of current events - i.e. the Arabian Spring - and the effects of their broad and accelerated means of distribution. They examine the awakening interest in animated documentaries, that promise autheticity precisely due to their subjective narrative style. And with the background of an ongoing fascination for this topic in the field of art, they will approach practices of representation and exhibition of the documentary.
